Fr Bernard was educated at St Ignatius College,
Stamford Hill, London, and, after completing his Ordinary Level
education in 1959, joined St Joseph’s Missionary Society to train
for the priesthood. He spent a year in Durham and a year in Formby,
completing his A Level education, after which, in 1961, he proceeded
to the Mill Hill College in Roosendaal, The Netherlands, where he
studied Philosophy. In 1963, he returned to London to study
Theology in St.Joseph’s College, Mill Hill and was ordained priest
on July 1st 1967, in his home parish of St.Peter-in-Chains,
North London.
On December 8th
1967, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, Fr Bernard traveled by
ship to his first appointment in Uganda and arrived three weeks
later in Mombasa. From there, he took a train arriving in Tororo,
Uganda on 1st January 1968. A week later he traveled once
more to the village of Toroma where he began his missionary
ministry.
In 1994, Fr
Bernard returned to the UK where he was part of the Formation Staff
at Mill Hill and taught at the Missionary Institute, London.
Thereafter, he was assigned to other key positions, culminating in
his election as Vicar General of the Mill Hill Society in July
2000.
Fr Bernard is
now back in Uganda, working in the northern Diocese of Kotido. With
the help of our supporters and volunteers, he continues to oversee
the various SPICMA projects in Uganda |
