I'm
one of four Jesuits working in Dzalalabad in South Kyrgyzstan. Our area
borders China, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan. In the past,
Catholic families living here were expelled from Stalinist Russia.
They are very much a minority within the communities. We Jesuits see
our work as spreading the Good News, teaching moral values and providing
material help for this socially marginalised part of the population. Many
of the children have disabilities and receive little or no governmental
aid. The riots which were recently reported in your media, have
highlighted the importance of our work with the Kyrgyz youth who were
involved in the unrest. It further illustrates the importance of
continuing our outreach and Spiritual Formation of the youth. Our Summer
camps for Catholic and Interfaith groups at the new Children’s
Rehabilitation and Spirituality Centre that we need please to finish,
are central to the work of building mutual respect. Sowing the seeds of
mutual love takes many years of effort, but will easier to do with the
young rather than with adults who are more intransigent in their
prejudices and beliefs. Could you please make this possible.
