 UGANDA and SOUTH AFRICA

Latrine and Bathroom Block in Bukedea, Uganda

The School is in a rural area and was set up by the parents themselves. They needed to provide education for their children but could not afford the high fees secondary boarding schools charge. They managed to acquire some redundant buildings from their neighbouring primary school and carried out some repairs. They also asked a local Religious Congregation, 'The Little Sisters of St. Francis' to provide a Headmistress. Sr. Mary Winifred Agwang was appointed - and being a dynamic person, she has developed the school to quite a high standard. She saw that some female students from far way could not go and come from home, so she built a small dormitory for them.

SPICMA provided funds for building a latrine and bathroom block. The latrine is used by all students whilst the bathroom area is reserved for the borders.

Piggery Project in Kapokin, Uganda

One of the Church workers who has served the Church faithfully for the last 20 years, wanted to set up a piggery project in his home which would enable him to rear pigs in a protected environment, and sell good quality pork meet to his neighbours. The area was badly affected by cattle raiding by the neighbouring Karamajong people who swept away all the people's cattle. There is a shortage of protein in the area. Also, pigs are not easy to steal and not attractive to the cattle raiders.

SPICMA gave him a grant to purchase piglets and the initial feed to start him off. Despite a setback when swine fever effected some of the pigs, he is developing the project through his own initiative and has started selling meat locally.

Women's Project in Kroonstad (South Africa)

Despite the end of Apartheid in South Africa, the African people who live in the townships are still economically disadvantaged and quite lacking in initiative, due to the years of oppression. One group who are organised is the Church based women's group. They meet regularly and have self help projects. This enables them to improve their lot and is an example to the rest of the people.

SPICMA has given a grant to the parish of Parijs to enable the women there to engage in making various saleable items, which include cloths and mats. This has given a boost to the women who are now able to develop on their own.

Your support can help other communities to be self sufficient and independent.
