The INFOCAD
project was initiated in Bukedea, Eastern Uganda, to supply Catechists
with heifers and bulls.
Because
of the civil war between 1986 and 1992 many families suffered the loss
of their livestock through large scale cattle raids by the neighbouring
Karimojong people. The catechists are the mainstay of the church
throughout Uganda. They receive very little in pay for their work and
depend on the people they serve for their upkeep. Indeed, many of the
Catechists themselves endured these cattle raids.
Consequently, the Catechists in Bukedea
decided to set up their own association, INFOCAD, through which they are
trying to improve the situation. A year ago, SPICMA gave a grant of
£9446 so that bulls and heifers could be purchased and through which
they could rebuild their home economies. Forty families have so far
benefited from the scheme. They are, indeed, very thankful to SPICMA. It
is a great encouragement for them in their work of service to the People
of God. |
